For nearly three decades, the U.S./French Canadian melodic death metal powerhouse KATAKLYSM has been unleashing unapologetic waves of raw, powerful sound across the globe. Their journey is a testament to resilience and artistic integrity. On August 11, 2023, they dropped their 15th studio album, Goliath, via Nuclear Blast Records, and it’s a beast of a record that demands attention.
Following the critical acclaim of their 2020 album Unconquered, KATAKLYSM took an unusual three-year hiatus from their typical two-year release cycle. This extra time allowed them to craft Goliath with a level of precision and intensity that’s palpable in every track. And this is the part most people miss: the album isn’t just aggressive—it’s a reflection of the world’s current chaos, a call to question the narratives we’re fed.
Vocalist Maurizio Iacono puts it bluntly: 'There's a lot of anger but also a lot of darkness in this record, it reflects the current mood of the world. 'Goliath' is an album that searches deep into questioning things that are happening on a global scale and inside society itself. Are you okay with everything you see?' It’s a bold statement that challenges listeners to think critically about their place in the world.
But here’s where it gets controversial: Iacono adds, 'There's something weird going on around the world, there is a lot of dysfunction. And this record has this mean, aggressive feeling about it. It's also about fighting back, standing up even if it seems at times impossible to do so…a modern-day David vs Goliath: fighting back for what is right for yourself and the people you love.' Is this just another angry metal album, or is KATAKLYSM onto something deeper? We’ll let you decide.
What sets KATAKLYSM apart isn’t just their technical prowess—it’s their ability to see the world through unfiltered eyes and translate that vision into music. Goliath is their response to the media noise, a declaration of their unique voice in a crowded genre. It’s innocent yet aggressive, a paradox that somehow works perfectly in today’s uncertain times.
Their latest single, 'The Rabbit Hole,' is a prime example of this balance. It’s a call to wake up, to question, to resist. With its signature blend of melodic intensity and raw energy, it’s a track that demands your attention and refuses to let go.
KATAKLYSM is:
- Maurizio Iacono - Vocals
- Jean-François Dagenais - Guitars

- James Payne - Drums
So, what do you think? Is Goliath just another metal album, or is KATAKLYSM tapping into something bigger? Are we too passive in accepting the narratives we’re given? Let us know in the comments—we’re eager to hear your take!
