Nuclear Power: A Controversial Comeback in Denmark?

A powerful alliance of Danish businesses, universities, and industry leaders has formed the Nuclear Power Alliance, advocating for a fresh perspective on nuclear power. This move comes as a bold challenge to the nation's long-standing ban on nuclear energy, implemented 40 years ago in 1985.
But here's where it gets controversial: The alliance argues for a technology-neutral approach, claiming that nuclear power can be a sustainable and necessary component of Denmark's energy mix. This stance is backed by international organizations like the United Nations and the International Energy Agency, who recognize nuclear power's potential in future energy systems.
The alliance includes prominent members such as the Confederation of Danish Industry, Dansk Metal, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation, along with Topsoe, Niras, and 92 Capital, a private equity fund focused on nuclear energy investments.
"We aim to foster an informed and forward-thinking dialogue about nuclear power's role in Denmark and Europe," the alliance states. "By promoting objectivity and technological neutrality, we will analyze nuclear power's potential in Denmark, engage in discussions with policymakers and the public, and ensure Danish interests are represented in the EU's small modular reactor (SMR) initiatives."
And this is the part most people miss: Despite the historical ban, a recent parliamentary vote revealed a shift in sentiment. Two-thirds of Danish MPs voted to explore nuclear power as a means to enhance energy security. This vote signals a potential turning point, with a report on the benefits of modern nuclear technologies expected in the near future.
"We must lift the ban and invest in research and development," asserts Emil Drevsfeldt Nielsen from Dansk Metal. "Nuclear power is a crucial technology for energy independence, and its affordability makes it an attractive option for industry."
