The battle for the opening slot has been a closely contested one. Sam Konstas, Khawaja's recent partner, has had a disappointing run, averaging just over 20 this season. This has left the door ajar for fresh talent, with names like Jake Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne in the mix.
Weatherald, the Tasmanian opener, has shown promise with three fifties this summer. However, insiders suggest he might be overlooked to accommodate both Cameron Green and Beau Webster in the top six, a move that could see Labuschagne open with Khawaja.
Labuschagne's purple patch
Labuschagne, who was dropped for the West Indies tour, has been on fire domestically, smashing five centuries in eight innings. Despite not opening for Queensland during this purple patch, his form is hard to ignore. He has only opened once for Australia, scoring modestly in the World Test Championship Final.
Queensland stalwart Matt Renshaw, another Australian opener, is also in the running. Having made his ODI debut recently, he is still a contender for the initial squad. However, his chances of making the final XI on November 21 seem slim at this stage.

In Labuschagne's absence at three, Cameron Green has stepped up, filling the void in the last four Tests. His numbers aren't impressive, but he has shown resilience on tough batting tracks. Green's bowling fitness is a concern, having missed the recent ODI series against India due to side soreness.
This could pave the way for Beau Webster to take on a bigger role as Australia's fourth seamer. Webster, who recently returned from an ankle injury, impressed with his bowling against Victoria, maintaining a tight economy rate.
Fast bowling cartel and reserves
The fast bowling lineup is largely settled, with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Scott Boland leading the charge in the absence of Pat Cummins. Boland, the country's long-time reserve paceman, is set to play in the first Test, leaving a spot open in the squad.
